Common questions about masonry & render painting
Why is it important to use a breathable masonry paint?
Masonry walls contain moisture that needs to escape. Non-breathable or film-forming paints trap this moisture, leading to blistering, flaking and damp problems. Breathable silicone masonry paints allow water vapour out while keeping rain water off — the right way to protect external walls.
My render has cracks — do these need repairing before painting?
Yes — cracks should be filled before painting. Hairline cracks can be filled with a flexible masonry filler, while larger structural cracks may need a proper render repair. Painting over cracks without addressing them first leads to early failure of the paint finish.
How many coats of masonry paint are needed?
Most exterior masonry jobs need two full coats after any primer or stabiliser. On highly absorbent or previously bare surfaces, a third coat may be recommended. We always follow manufacturer guidelines and will advise on the correct number of coats when we quote.
