Common questions about fence & gate painting
Should I use fence paint or wood stain on my timber panels?
Fence paint gives a solid opaque colour and good weather resistance. Wood stain is more transparent, enhancing the grain, and is often preferred on better-quality timber. For cheap pine panels, a solid fence paint is usually the better choice. We'll advise based on what you have.
How do you prepare metal gates before painting?
We clean the surface, remove loose paint and rust with wire brushing and sanding, and treat any rust spots with a rust converter. We then apply a rust-inhibiting metal primer before the topcoats. Preparation is critical for metal — paint won't last on a poorly prepared surface.
How often does fence painting need redoing?
With proper preparation and a good quality product, fence paint typically needs redoing every three to five years. Wood stain on better timber may last longer. Fences in very exposed or shaded, damp positions will need more frequent attention.
