Common questions about wall lining & preparation
When is wall lining paper necessary?
Lining paper is recommended when walls have significant patching, uneven surfaces, or where a premium wallpaper is being applied over walls that aren't perfectly smooth. It's also widely used as a base for painting in older properties where the plaster is imperfect.
What weight of lining paper should I use?
Lining paper comes in different weights — from 800 grade (thinner) to 2000 grade (thick and heavy). For most painted walls, 1000 to 1200 grade is suitable. For walls with more significant irregularities, or as a base for expensive wallpaper, 1400 or 2000 grade gives a better result.
Can you skim plaster as well as hang lining paper?
Yes — for walls with significant unevenness or damaged areas, we can assess whether skim plastering or heavy lining paper is the better solution. In some cases, a combination of localised skim repairs followed by lining paper is the most practical approach.
