Common questions about new build painting & decorating
Why does new build plaster need a mist coat rather than normal paint?
New plaster is highly porous. A full-strength emulsion applied directly to new plaster dries too quickly and unevenly, resulting in a patchy finish and poor adhesion. A diluted mist coat soaks in and seals the plaster, giving subsequent coats a consistent surface to bond to.
Should I choose my colours before moving in or wait until I'm living in the space?
Many homeowners prefer to wait until they've lived in the space briefly to understand how light affects different rooms. That said, new plaster needs time to dry, so there's naturally a waiting period in which to make colour decisions — we'll work around your timeline.
Can you also hang wallpaper in a new build?
Yes, but typically not until the plaster has fully dried — usually at least six to eight weeks for fresh plaster. Hanging wallpaper on damp plaster causes adhesive failure and bubbling. We'll check moisture levels before hanging any wallpaper.
